Inspirational pupils from Beech Hall School have been awarded the prestigious Mayor of Macclesfield Youth Civic Award, in recognition of their phenomenal success in swimming across the English Channel and extraordinary efforts in raising £35,000 for Mencap.

The team of pupils from the Tytherington-based school, who formed last year's English Channel Swim Squad, were presented with the highly-coveted award at the Thanksgiving Service and Awards hosted by The Mayor of Macclesfield, Cllr David Edwardes. The esteemed accolade is awarded to those who have gone above and beyond to make a difference to a community group or the local town.

Beech Hall School Headmaster, James Allen commented: "We are incredibly proud of our Beech Hall Channel Swim Squad and are delighted that they have been honoured with this award. It is a remarkable accomplishment, for which our pupils showcased incredible determination and resilience to not only complete their relay swim of the English Channel but also to raise a significant amount of money for charity, hugely exceeding their intended target."

In continuation of the tradition, and now with a highly-ambitious fundraising target of £50,000, this year's Swim Squad is currently participating in a strenuous training programme in readiness to conquer the English Channel this July.
