The King's School has appointed a new team of School Captains to help lead the Senior pupil cohort. The team will receive professional leadership training to help them meet their new challenges and prepare them for later life.

The two Senior School Captains, who will lead a team of over 20 Prefects looking after boys and girls from Year 7 to Year 11 at the top independent school, will be Elijah Willcock and Angel Wale-Akinlua.

In an exhaustive recruitment process, each candidate first had to submit a written application before interviews with senior staff and then voting by both pupils and teachers.

Keen cricketer Elijah, 16, came to England only last year from Johannesburg. He formerly attended a leading public school in Centurion and said of King's: "It's actually a little bit smaller than my school in Johannesburg, but it has a bigger community spirit."

Elijah, who wants to read Medicine at university, added: "I want to ensure all the pupils have a voice and we can help to create a vision of how the School should operate that benefits both pupils and teachers."

Angel, 15, who wants to study Aeronautical Engineering at University, said: "I want to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and happy at school and they all know they can come and speak to us at any time."

That theme was echoed by one of her Vice-Captains, Lucy Hancock, 14, who said: "We need to be friendly and approachable especially so that the younger ones feel able to come and talk to us."

While another of the new Vice-Captains, Sebastian Fitzgerald, 15, added: "I want to encourage all the pupils to take full advantage of all the wonderful opportunities available to them at King's and encourage everyone to make the most of their education."

Helen Broadley, Principal of King's Senior Division, with responsibility for pupils in Year 7 to 11, said: "We have in this group of pupils a strong leadership team who will embrace their roles and the opportunities presented. They have been selected because we felt they were compassionate, strong-minded and full of good ideas."
