Macclesfield Town have been hit with a seven-point deduction by the EFL which leaves them just three points above bottom club Stevenage at the foot of Sky Bet League Two.

The deduction, which places the Silkmen in danger of relegation from the league if the season resumes, follows the latest two misconduct charges brought against the troubled club.

They related to an unfulfilled fixture against Plymouth Argyle on December 21 last year and the non-payment of players in February this year.

Macclesfield’s home game against Plymouth was postponed after they failed to get a safety certificate for their Moss Rose stadium.

A further two-point deduction imposed by the independent disciplinary commission has been suspended, on the condition that the club does not breach any further regulations this season.

The Silkmen have now had a total of 11 points deducted during this season for breaches of league regulations.

In a statement confirming the latest points deduction, the club said it had admitted the misconduct charges against it at “the earliest possible opportunity”.

It added: “The panel ruled that a sporting sanction of four points should be applied immediately in relation to these charges, with two points suspended on the condition that the club does not breach any further regulations this season.

“In addition to this, the arbitration panel also ruled that three suspended points which related to previous charges should be applied immediately.

“This means that the club now reside in 23rd position within the Sky Bet League Two table, having amassed a revised total of 25 points.”

That puts the Silkmen three points above Stevenage and seven behind third-bottom Morecambe, although the situation regarding the rest of the season plus relegation and promotion with the National League remains uncertain.

All games have been halted as a result of the coronavirus crisis and there have been reports that there are plans to abandon the rest of the season, with league bosses considering a ‘points-per-game model’ to determine promotion and relegation.
