PLAYED in honour of one of Macclesfield's most respected sportspeople, The King's School's Alan McInnes Memorial Bursary Golf Day raised £3,000 to help fun assisted places at the school.

The King's community lost their former pupil and former Salford rugby league player and Wigan coach in December 2017 and he is very much fondly remembered by his many friends who turned out on a glorious day at Hollins Golf Course.

Jewellers Mickey and David Jones produced a gem of a day with the help of skipper Ken Grant and Joe Linzey from Cavendish, who recorded a stunning 69 for 61 net, they won with 97 points in the best two of four full handicap Stableford.

In second place were Neil Drummond, former Head of Physical Education Mark Harbord, David Robinson and Simon Carter, with 94 points.

One of the highlights was the 'beat the professional' event in which former King's pupil Jae Bowers took on all comers down the par three 18th showing off her elegant but powerful swing.

The 25-year-old, who lives and plays in Macclesfield is currently on the Let Access tour and is aiming to move up to the full tour "if I can continue to develop my ball striking and mental strength."

Headmaster Dr Simon Hyde said of Alan, who also played rugby for Sale and was a talented cricketer: "Alan knew he had benefitted from a King's education and very much wanted local boys and girls who might otherwise not be able to come to King's to enjoy the same great education.

"Alan was not only a pupil at King's, but after his professional rugby career, he taught at the school and went on to become a governor."

"We currently have some 70 pupils in the school who benefit from the bursary fund and like Alan we expect them to go on to achieve great things."
