DOZENS of volunteers worked together to tidy up a stretch of the Macclesfield Canal as part of this year's Great British Spring Clean.

Members of the Macclesfield and District Canoe Club, Macclesfield Canal Society, and the Canal and River Trust took part in the clean-up alongside the Bollington Towpath Group and town MP David Rutley.

They started at Adelphi Mill in Bollington and worked their way towards Macclesfield, cleaning up a three and a half mile stretch of the waterway.

Volunteers either took to the water in kayaks and open boats, using nets to fish out debris from areas that were only accessible from the water, or made their way down the towpath on foot, gathering up litter and waste with hand-held equipment.

A huge variety of waste and litter was collected from the canal, ranging from plastic waste, to tyres, a bin, a large metal drum, and tree branches. It is the second year that the event has taken place.
