Ahead of the match between Macclesfield and Sheffield Tigers, local MP, David Rutley, visited Macclesfield Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC), to view the progress made in completing its new Spiral Lounge, created as a new purpose-built space for players, fans and guests to relax and enjoy together, and to learn more about next steps relating to this important project.

David was shown around the lounge by Macclesfield RUFC Chairman, Pete Harper, who explained that the significant time and expense that has been required to take forward this project. This included: knocking down the wall between the Presidents Suite and Trophy Room; building a storage area for furniture, redecorating and revamping the bar in the former Presidents Suite; and laying down new flooring. As well as making more effective use of the existing clubrooms, the new lounge also allows for more flexibility over the use of the main bar area, helping to encourage great community usage, and increase revenue for the Club.

Mr Harper explained that the commitment of a small group of volunteers at the Club was key to enabling the works to reach this important stage. The project was funded thanks to the generosity of Club members, nine of whom donated almost £8,000 between them in support of the project. The completion of the lounge would also not have been possible without the support of a number of local sponsors and businesses, who provided assistance with building materials. In addition, Manchester's Holts Brewery, which supplies the Club, revamped the beer cellar, so that the Club now has state of the art bar facilities, serving high quality beer.

The Club is seeking further assistance to complete the outstanding aspects of the project, such as improving the toilet facilities and changing rooms, to support the Club’s ambitions with women’s rugby; and fitting essential disabled access to upstairs areas of the club. All funds donated to the club to support this important work will be ring-fenced for this purpose. Any local residents or businesses that would like to support this important project for the Club can express an interest by contacting: info@maccrugby.co.uk

Speaking after his visit, David said, "The Spiral Lounge is an impressive new facility for Macclesfield Rugby Club, and it is positive to see the progress that has already been made in completing the necessary works. There is more work to do to help bring this project to fruition for the community, and I hope local residents and businesses will look at what support they may be able to provide to assist the Club in realising its ambitions for this exciting new space."
