Talented young Macclesfield cricketer Josh Rajendran has hit it out of the park by earning an offer from Oxford University despite lockdown restrictions.

The 17-year-old King’s School Sixth Form student needs an A* and two A grades to read economics with management at Hertford College.

He is studying A Levels in maths, further maths, economics and German having achieved a stunning seven grade 9s, three 8s and an A star in further maths at GCSE.

Josh plays cricket for both Macclesfield Cricket Club and King’s as a stylish middle order batsman. Ultimately, he wants to work in the City.

He said: “I hope that experience in one of the world’s great financial hubs will offer many other opportunities both at home and overseas in the future.”

Josh has been frustrated by the repeated lockdowns, but grateful that his school has “provided a full programme of online lessons and tutorials throughout lockdown.”

He said: “I know I have been incredibly lucky to be at King’s. I talk to my teachers every day and have a full programme of work, but obviously I miss my friends and the chance to play cricket for the school will not come round again. But there are far worse problems for so many others.”

Jamie Macgregor, King’s head of economics, said: “After just a few weeks of economics lessons we could tell that Josh was something special.”
