A Covid Christmas will still be memorable for Greenbank Preparatory School pupils who had the thrill of riding into the manger on a Jerusalem donkey.

This year both the carol service and the nativity had to be filmed in school with no live audience, but children did get to ride on thebreed of donkey believed to have carried Mary into Jerusalem.

Pictured are Louis Shenton (11) as Joseph and Ava Frayne (10) as Mary on seven-year-old Legend, one of 46 donkeys resident at Alwood Donkey Sanctuary on the Wirral.

Greenbank Preparatory School Assistant Head Jacqueline Reeder said: "At Christmas we like to make memories for the children that will last a lifetime.

"So much of what we can do has had to be called off this year, but there is still so much we can do and bringing in Legend and his fellow donkey Paddy certainly brought a flurry of excitement throughout the school.

"Every child got to stroke the donkeys and we had a parade with Joseph leading Mary into the Manger."

Other Christmas events Greenbank has organised include: "A Covid safe Christmas Fair, a Christmas hot chocolate break time, a Christmas children's quiz, a celebration of Hanukkah with traditional doughnuts, a Christmas jumper day, a guess the teddy's name, a chocolate tombola, a raffle and even a socially distanced visit from the man himself, Father Christmas."
