Prestbury Primary wins King's Macclesfield Maths Challenge

Prestbury Primary School's brains trust had it all figured out in the King's School annual Macclesfield and District Primary School's Mathematics Challenge.

The brilliant young boffins won the tough three-hour challenge answering a series of ever more taxing questions to beat top young analysts from a record entry of 14 local primary schools.

Selected in teams of four by their schools for their numerical and analytical skills, the pupils took on a series of taxing questions including many that seemed far from child's play:

For example, what is lowest whole number that is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Kings School Head of Mathematics Timothy Jones said: "It has been a very special and exciting day for the King's Maths Department; working with such sharp and receptive young minds is always an absolute delight."

He added: "Our objective is to try and build the students love of Maths and problem solving and to offer an opportunity to extend and challenge some of the brightest local young mathematicians."

In second place were Marton and District and the bronze place went to Upton Priory. The other teams came from Ash Grove, Bollinbrook, Gawsworth, Hurdsfield, Ivy Bank, Marlborough, King's Juniors, Parkroyal Community School, St Albans and Wincle Church of England Primary. The answer is 2050. Josephine Croft, Upper Key Stage 2 Leader, at Prestbury Primary, said: "We are very proud of our wonderful mathematicians for winning the challenge. They worked so well as a team to communicate to solve a range of problems in the different rounds."
