The launch of the new Integrated Community Stroke Rehabilitation Service for East Cheshire residents next month has moved a step closer, with the contract to provide the service now awarded, in a move welcomed by local MP, David Rutley.

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust will provide this important new service, which will mean patients recovering from strokes will receive care and support much closer to their homes, helping to reduce hospital stays by as much as six days and freeing up hospital beds more quickly. The service has been designed and funded by NHS Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group (ECCCG) and is worth £1.5 million over the three-year period of the contract.

The service will bring together representatives from local health services and social care staff from Cheshire East Council to help ensure that patients' physical, psychological and social needs can be more fully and effectively met. It is expected that around 300 patients per year will use the service, with an average rehabilitation time of up to six weeks, although this may be longer depending on the patient's individual circumstances.

ECCCG has worked closely with stroke survivors and their families and carers to help design the shape and scope of the new service. The service also has the support of the local Macclesfield Stroke Association.

Commenting, David said, "It is positive news that this important new service remains on track to launch very soon. It is clear that it will make a real difference in enhancing care and support for stroke survivors and ensure that their treatment more fully responds to their needs.”
