Restaurant Review by Robin Atkins

I was invited to undertake a review of this restaurant shortly after it came under new ownership. Gulam Moktadir (Bilal), the new owner gave us a warm welcome on arrival and his passion for providing top quality cuisine shone through immediately.

Bilal has certainly gone to town with a refurbishment programme making the restaurant more open plan and including a stunning variety of new pictures. I loved the huge montage depicting Bollywood films! Whilst most of the original décor is still in place the additions have certainly enhanced the restaurant extremely well.

Bilal’s pedigree is most impressive, winning several prestigious Awards including the BCA Award for Best Restaurant in the North of England and two time winner of the England Curry Award.

The menu is a delight and has been completely re-vamped – apart from a range of traditional curries there are mouth watering options including warm starters and grilled Kebabs. South Indian dishes are cornerstone to their menu. These dishes are traditionally eaten for breakfast lunch or dinner in India even to this day. They are served in Indian streets, restaurants and homes.

The Signature list is most impressive and would satisfy all tastes and budgets. Many on this list were completely unknown to me but I saw some on other tables and they looked exceptional.

Bilal told us that he would serve a range of his Mixed Thali (Tapas) which he eats at home. He also mentioned that we wouldn’t need anything else once we had devoured this dish - he wasn’t wrong!

Two enormous trays (see pictures) arrived with a beautifully presented array of dishes. One was a vegetarian selection and the other was a selection of meat and fish options - both trays included a fabulous range of sauces together with Naan Bread. Street food at its very best is an understatement!  Every dish was perfectly cooked and the mixture of flavours were quite simply unique. The range available is incredible, you can mix and match whichever suits you .

How often do we have an Indian meal and come out feeling bloated and uncomfortable? These Mixed Thali dishes are the perfect answer and ideal if you want a light meal or you can select enough to share with as many people you want. An excellent range of beers, wines and spirits to accompany your cuisine are great value. Takeaway service is of course available.

The Tiffin Kitchen has certainly ticked all the boxes and I cannot recommend it enough – well worth a visit and bookings are advisable, especially weekends.
